Time seems to rush by, as swiftly as the wind that drives the clouds away. In the past, on small-scale farms, cows and bulls often roamed outdoors. Calves sometimes stayed with their mothers for longer. Production was smaller, and there was more attention to each individual animal – though it wasn’t perfect. Then came intensive livestock farming. Everything had to become more efficient. Animals were moved indoors, calves were separated from their mothers right after birth, and there was little room for natural behavior.
Later, awareness about animal welfare began to grow. Organic farms emerged, where cattle were given more freedom to be themselves. Yet, intensive farming still persists. The road ahead is still long. Clouds continue to gather, but they also pass. If we broaden our horizon and follow our hearts – for ourselves, for nature, and for its animals – things can still change for the better.
